Schweizerische Südostbahn – A Digital Alpine Express

The Schweizerische Südostbahn (SOB) is a major railroad company based in St. Gallen. Its route network covers eastern and central Switzerland and includes well-known connections such as the Voralpen-Express as well as various suburban railroad lines.

As part of the “Digital Rail Access” project, Schweizerische Südostbahn AG (SOB) decided to modernize its customer information displays, also known as digital signage front ends. This included updating departure monitors, destination displays, and smart information displays.

Departure monitors inform passengers of upcoming departures and are typically positioned in highly visible locations near station entrances or underpasses. Overhead destination displays, or ZZAs, provide information on the next train departure, including direction of travel and train information. These displays are found on platforms. Smart Information Displays (SID) are versatile touch displays that allow interactive use by passengers, displaying information such as upcoming departures, schedules, and platform-specific data. SID devices are typically located on platforms or in central areas of stations.

This project was implemented in cooperation with our partner Kilchenmann, who was responsible for the media technology planning and provided programming services. Kilchenmann also took over the procurement of licenses for the screen management system. This major project was realized in successful cooperation with Netcetera, easescreen, and hardware suppliers in order to offer passengers a modernized information service.
